REVIEW: Jamahl Ryder Defy Reality Album Launch Party

Picture
Jamahl Ryder is a proud Indigenous man of many talents, from acting to rapping, to hosting his own radio show on Noongar Radio with his mate called The Naughty Bros. At the Four5Nine Bar on Saturday 15th June, Jamahl showed not only his skill but also his love of Hip Hop, with his album launch party for Defy Reality.

Walking towards the Four5Nine bar, Jamahl was at the door greeting everyone in the line. After saying hello to him I walked down the stairs and into the venue. Although it was a smaller venue, it was the perfect size for the number of people who were about to arrive.

Once it hit 9:00 pm the host of the evening Optamus from Downsyde was up on stage welcoming everyone and introducing the first act. Read more here.

Disco is Spectacular and here to stay: Interview with Norma Jean Wright

PictureChic with Norma Jean Wright
If you aren’t familiar with the name Chic, then I am certain you would have heard their music. Their funky brand of soulful disco tracks, such as Everybody Dance and Le Freak, are infamous, and have been played for dance floors for over 40 years. Their music has been covered by countless bands, and has been re-used and re-worked in advertising across the globe.

When guitarist Nile Rogers and bassist Bernard Edwards first formed Chic, they employed the skills of a little known vocalist by the name of Norma Jean Wright. Wright had previously sang with the female trio, The Topettes, and later toured with Detroit R&B vocal group, The Spinners.

In 1977, Wright went on to become the band’s lead vocalist, recording the vocals for the band’s self-titled debut album. Her dulcet vocals would become synonymous with the Chic sound carved out by Rogers and Edwards.

“I had no idea that the music would as iconic as it has now become but I definitely felt that the music was just good music and I was motivated."
