November Hussle Hussle with F.A.M collective

PictureMojo's Bar Fremantle
The November edition of Hussle Hussle was taken over by local collective F.A.M and it was set to be an eventful one, particularly as it was Hyclass’ I NEED U EP launch. The long-awaited EP for the seasoned Perth femcee has been well-received by the local scene and is hopefully just a little taster of what more is to come from Hyclass.

The F.A.M collective consists of Hyclass, singer/beatman Rae, singer Nat Mae and singer/rapper/musician Wallah, and the name F.A.M is an abbreviation of Family and Music. The collective’s member’s talents are multi faceted with them all rapping, singing and playing some sort of instrument.

Kicking of the performances was Wallah who admitted that this set was his solo Australian gig. He started his set with a song that he had written 8 years old called Wonderland. As it was his first performance on our humble shores, you could sense a slight nervousness but the grateful audience dispelled those emotions. By the fourth song Together, Wallah had found his groove and performed with a quiet confidence. Unfortunately it was a “fast” set and he closed joined by Nat Mae and Hyclass to give us the slamming Slow Down.

Rae was next on the set list and though it wasn’t his first performance, he admitted that he hadn’t been in stage in a “long time”. Luckily for the slowly increasing crowd, he had his guitar and was about to give us a “breakdown of past songs”. Rae is a natural performer who seems at home on stage. During the second song
Choose, he moved between rapping and singing with ease, and then was joined on stage by Nat Mae to perform Do Yours, their voices harmonising beautifully. Rae even treated the crowd to a song written 10 years ago Conscious, which was still relevant in today’s cultural climate.

By the end of Rae’s set, Mojos was filling nicely with many people on the dance floor just in time for Nat Mae’s set. And what a set it was. Seeing Mae last weekend at the Ellington where she sung mostly covers, it was exciting to hear her perform original songs. She performed a mixture of R&B tracks versus hip hop tracks – all produced by Rae - where she would occasionally spit a rhyme.

The song of the night for me was
Show Me The Way; a song about working a 9-to-5 but wanting to live your passion, making music. The song reminded me of a 90’s R&B track and was well received by the crowd, with everyone joining in to sing the hook.

Finally, it was the set everyone was waiting for, Hyclass. The rapper came to the stage starting off with thanking her family, friends and fans. You could see she was clearly humbled by the love, respect and support she has received since releasing the long-awaited EP. She then launched fiercely into performing the 8-track mixtape. It’s always disappointing when the live performance sounds different, however not with Hyclass. Everything sounded exactly as it did on the mixtape live. Every rhyme, every beat. The mixtape is reminiscent of the 90’s so there are a lot of tracks to get down to, and that the crowd did. Down Homie and the final song Who Want It received the most crowd response, however all tracks were very well-received, which I think took Hyclass slightly off guard as half way through the set she stopped to comment on how blessed she felt. Who Want It was a great end to the set as the upbeat track had everyone moving creating an infectious vibe.

The November Hussle Hussle was one of my favourites in a long time but, I may be biased as I am a massive fan of the collective’s style. However you can’t not love artists who choose to play The Internet’s Special Affair and Mya/Jay-Z’s 2000 track The Best of Me (I don’t think I’d heard that song in over 10 years but could still recite every word!) in between sets. To top it all off, it was Hussle Hussle promoter Meng’s birthday and F.A.M sung her Happy Birthday to close the evening. December you’ve got a lot to live up to.
