Mugzy Interview |

For Rappfox readers, who aren’t familiar with Mugzy, tell us a bit about yourself.
Yeah the name’s Mugzy, I’m 25yrs old, resigned in a place called The Central Coast, which is about 1 hour & a half North of Sydney's CBD.
My brother who is 2 years younger than me introduced me to hip hop music.
When we were kids he had all these burnt CD's of artists such as Eminem, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, even the likes of Bow Wow [laughs] and they were on loop constantly playing daily throughout the house.
Fast forward to 05 I think I was 14 at the time so yr8 of High School I use to get punked & bullied a lot which cause me to have suicidal depression. Throughout that year I got myself an IPod and started listening to artists such as Eminem (Been a white boy myself) & his aggression/lyrics just gave me a voice to fight back like this voice in my head saying (Don’t take no sh** anymore).
When I was so attached with Eminem's music I then started listening to more artists such as Tupac, 50 Cent etc. etc. and they kind of developed me into a different person.
Later on down the road I knew I was never good at school so instead of doing my work I would drop some small rhymes in my book but I knew if I wanted to progress this I would have to write full songs.
Cut a long story short from having those influences on my IPod and dropping down those rhymes in my work book its led me to release 2 albums (hopefully working on a third), Radio Play/Magazine Features WORLDWIDE, 12k & OVER fan base WORLDWIDE, Tone of Acting Roles, and BEST of all meet & greets with celebs/idols I thought I’d never meet in my LIFE on this Earth.
You’ve been rapping for nearly 11 years now, how have you evolved as an artist?
When I was staring off back in ‘05 my influences were a lot of gangsta rap artists such as (50 Cent/G-Unit, NWA, Snoop Dogg etc.) and I thought it was such a cool image to be like “you know with the whole (Rep ya hood, gangs, violence all that stuff), which I never actually did.
Like my image coming into the game was (Baggy Jeans, White Nike Sneakers, Du-Rag, 3 Chains, G-Unit Jumper, Basketball Jersey etc.) I was legit the BIGGEST WIGGER haha.
My first album (Ride Or Die) was a complete representation of WIGGER-LIFE most of the tracks on it are (shooting guns, Hood Life the works) To this day I cant even listen to it its such a abomination just straight WACK.
But back then when I released it I thought “OMG THIS IS DEF GONNA GET ME SIGNED”.
Around that time I got myself involved with a lot of hip-hop based (Groups/People) around The Central Coast & Sydney just to see other unique flows/music of other artists out there.
I started researching more (watching a lot of Documentary's, Reading Bio's, Expanding the music I listen to such as genre/artist wise) and it got me thinking that there is more other aspects/expression of hip hop out there than gangsta rap
So I dropped the wigger act and started dropping down rhymes about my opinions on things such as (Hip Hop Music, Society, Why I want to make it in this game etc.) and people respected it more because they could see more realness out of me than what I was doing with the whole wigger act. So those idea's became my 2nd album (Understand Me).
You released the album Understand Me a couple years ago, what was your creative process?
I was piling up details on how to record/release a second album such as (Beats/Lyrics).
I didn’t want it to be like the 1st one, which was straight WACK like I explained in the previous question.
Gangsta Rap is so (simple/easy) to write its insane but if it ain’t real its straight wack PLUS it can get you into a lot of Sh**.
So I had to put my thinking cap on and sit down to fully express myself in a way without being fake.
Producer and now good friend of mine (Pablo Gutierrez) is a Guinness when it comes to creating an album the right way.
Beats wise I already had some instrumentals but the ones we had to start from scratch our creative process was we would set the mood of the track based on the title Example if it were a sad song we would look on YouTube a grab an artist song like (Eminem Cleaning Out My Closet) then get the instrumental and blend it into our own way BUT not completely the same because of copyright
And we would do that with whatever the tracks mood were whether it be (Emotion, Party, In Ya Face, etc.)
With my first album Ride Or Die it was done in a professional studio so its get ya in get ya out an the prices just SKY ROCKET UP an UP all the time.
If you don’t have BIG CASH then it’s a quick/rough job and that’s what my 1st album was with my 2nd album (Understand Me) it was recorded in Pablo's home studio.
He would sit down an toss up idea's with me on how to make this album DOPE a real Producer to Artist connection he wasn’t in it for a pay check, plus with structure and time we would take as much time as we need to make it so ears would love to hear it NOT Scrappy and rush. I hope his on board for my third.
What else do you have in the works?
I have a tone of ideas at the moment and too many beats to keep track of haha.
It gets hard to pick which ones I want to write stuff to and put on for a third release because there are just so many good ones (The life of an artist haha).
With this third album I’m planning on doing a 2-disk also in talks with a lot of high up artist collabs such as (Solomon Childs, J-Wess, Bless, Slo Down, Masta Ace, Redman). I have their contact details just hope they give me the green light to jump on board for a collab, as that will be a BIG STEP in my career specially being an underground artist.
And to finish on a completely irrelevant question, what’s your favourite animal?
Gorilla.
