Mad Fap Entertainment certainly pushes the boundaries when it comes to the status quo of shows. Incorporating music (usually hip hop), comedy and theatrical performance, their events provide opportunities for a wide range of local artists to perform and makes for a very entertaining evening. Friday’s Mad Planet Showcase VI: The Jan Michael Massacre was no different.
Hosted by pseudo-comedian/rapper Ash Woodward with Bace Kadet on the decks, the Mad Fap Battle Roast judges for the night was fan favourite Dezpondent and guest judge Syllabolix rapper Optamus. And despite a couple of sound set up hurdles, the Lost Society Bar provided a fitting venue for the eclectic mix of event attendees.
The opening act for the evening was rapper Cable. Albeit a short set, he had enough time to display the lyrical skill that has made him quite a popular up-and-comer. Cable’s set was followed by the first comedy roast/rap battle of the night between Grant Mushet and Douglas Harvey. It’s interesting to see the comedians attempt to freestyle rap, you would think it would be relatively easy, as roasting, similarly, is off the dome. Unfortunately not the case. Whilst Dezpondent wanted to take a diplomatic approach, Optamus cut to the chase and Harvey won the battle.
The night's line up alternated between hip hop acts and comedy battles which certainly kept it interesting. Coerce was the next rapper to step to the mic. His high-energy performance really lifted the vibe of the room. His set was followed by comedy roast between Skulka and Phatigue. Both dudes are also rappers so I knew this was going to be a funny one. Phatigue was the clear winner in this round, even dropping a Chester Bennington line. Too soon? Maybe, but at least he didn't talk about Vegas.
Map Fap regulars, Penny Purr & Bowzer Destroyer of Worlds, both also graced the stage with their unique flavours of hip hop. Purr got real as she rapped and then spoke on her experience of bullying as an obese teenager. Bowzer, as always, kept the entire crowd - and a few passerbys who peered through the glass windows - entranced with his sex-saturated lyrics and gyrating hips.
The next comedy roast battle, that was between Donkey and Shock, got quite heated. Shock seemed to be crushing Donkey with the jokes, though hitting some sensitive topics. But when it came to the rap battle, it would seem that Shock had some writtens, whereas Donkey was freestyling (jury is still out on that one). Being the diplomatic one this time, Optamus acknowledged that point and the crowd was to decide the winner. Shock won the round.
And then it was time for the main hip hop act of the night, Bluntfield. Performing songs from his recently released The Jan Michael Vincent mixtape, the night was a celebration. The mixtape tracks use great samples such as Beck’s Loser and Whitetown’s Your Girl which along with Bluntfield’s raps were well-received by the crowd. Coerce joined Bluntfield on stage briefly for the collaborative track Thirsty Mammals.
Closing out the evening was the Mad Fap Battle Roast Championship between reigning champion Daniel Delby and Yully. Delby is a seasoned stand-up comedian and Yully is an up-and-coming femcee who freestyles regularly. Another exciting match up. Unfortunately the comedian on this occasion was more than up to the challenge, as he spoke and rapped comedic gold. Yully came back with a few dope one-liners but showed her true talent when she freestyled the insults. The judges calling the round a draw.
A heterogeneous mix of people and talent, Map Fap Entertainment’s Mad Planet Showcase VI: The Jan Michael Massacre was another dynamic event from the innovative crew. Here’s til the next one…
