Melted Sundae at The Ellington Jazz Club |

Events like Melted Sundae are enthusing, as they give many local acts the opportunity to showcase their talents. And Saturday night’s event was a who’s who of the Perth scene with performances from Alex Ford, Silvertongue, Creed Birch, Rob Delirious, Macshane, Hyclass, Sarah Pellicano and Natalie Mae.
With no specific sets and most of the artists having collaborated with each other in the past, Melted Sundae felt like one big jam session. All throughout the evening, artists were hopping on and off the stage to assist one another in their performances, whether that be to spit a verse or to belt out a hook.
Kicking off the entertainment was Macshane; an emcee has been on the Perth scene for a relatively short time but has graced stages at Villa, the Causeway (RIP) and Laneway Lounge. After performing a solo track, he was joined on stage by fellow emcee and friend Silvertongue. The duo performed a collaborative track that resulted in some interesting freestyles. And just as swiftly as he joined the stage, Macshane departed.

Silvertongue who is known for his affinity for the herbal - see his The Chronsoon Season mixtape from 2012 – was then joined on stage by Nat Mae to perform his ode to weed Peter Parker. Nat Mae’s melodic tone on the hook was the perfect balance to Silvertongue’s verses.
Following some serious rapping, it was a nice change of pace to hear Nat Mae sing some soul. Giving us a beautiful rendition of Amy Winehouse’s Stronger than Me, which featured an unforgettable trumpet solo, Mae showed the intimate audience why she is a prominent singer in Perth.
Finally, the host for the evening Alex Ford came to the stage joined by rapper/singer Rob Delirious, the duo performing the unreleased track Ride With It. Ford then proceeded to perform a solo track that had the audience moving in enjoyment. After Ford’s solo track, the pair swapped with Delirious came back on stage to give a passionate performance of his solo track The Lights.
Sarah Pellicano, another well-known local singer, was next on the line-up to come on stage and she started off with an impressive cover of Destiny’s Child’s Say My Name, which was well received by the crowd (especially this writer!). Pellicano was then joined on stage by frequent collaborator and good friend Creed Birch to perform Finding More. Birch gave an energetic performance lifting the vibe in the room.
Femcee Hyclass was next on the rotation and treated the crowd to some tracks off her recently released mixtape I Need U. Mae who also features on the mixtape joined her. Performing Who Want It and Let’s Get It On, the female rapper showed why her long-awaited mixtape has been celebrated by the local scene.
The definite highlight of the evening, for myself however, was the duo's cover of The Roots' You Got Me. Hyclass handled the rhymes whilst Mae covered Erykah Badu's iconic hook. And it was just magical.

The band who I have neglected to mention until now - how foolish of me - were nothing short of amazing. There is something about a live band that just makes every note sound THAT much better. And the 7-piece Premiss and The Ruby Horns band did not miss a beat. The band have also been gaining recognition in Perth, thanks to their ability to execute tracks of many genres in serious flair.
As the hours wiled by, the rotating roster of 8 artists plus the 7-piece band, executed their solo and collaborated tracks with heart, soul and propensity, giving the audience a exquisite taste of the hip hop, RnB, soul and jazz that Perth has to offer. The night closing with a Caribbean-inspired track by Sarah Pellicano and Creed Birch.
Events like Melted Sundae give local artists an avenue to perform openly and passionately, and to just have fun on stage. Hats off to Alex Ford for organising such an event. I know many people all looking forward to the third edition of Melted Sundae.
