Dank presents... JFB (UK DMC DJ)

Picture
Following success in 2015, monthly night Dank kicked off 2016 bringing UK DMC Champion JFB to our fine city with an event at The Game Sports Bar. The UK DJ was touring Australia for the second time and came to Perth (again) to show turntablist fans how it’s done.

The first set of the night was Sammy Mc b2b Soho; two local ladies who worked the CDJs. Their set consisted of mainly bass-heavy sounds and trap music. And though there was a small audience during their set, there was a definite vibe in the room and crowd forming on the dance floor.

The girls were followed by fellow local DJ, High Power. He also played the CDJ’s and his music followed in the same vein as the girls. Later on in his set, he introduced some drum & bass and dubstep sounds, which judging by the reaction on the dance floor, was well-received by the crowd.

Perth DMC Champion Midsole played the final set before JFB and it was the first time in the evening the turntable set up got a working. His set also included lots of trap music, but he did drop a number of hip hop tracks throughout – another first for the night.

JFB hit the decks shortly after midnight and provided a spectacular display of turntablism, including scratching, mixing behind his back and music from a broad range of genres. The DJ demonstrating why he is a three-time UK DMC Champion. Though there was a lot of trap/bass-heavy music played on the night, JFB broke the mould and it was a welcomed deviance.

Some of the unexpected tracks he played were Talk Dirty to Me – Jason Derulo and Thunderstruck – ACDC (though it was an Australian crowd so playing Thunderstruck was not that outrageous, but hearing it in a DJ set certainly was for me). And in honour of his friend and fellow performer of the night (though elsewhere), he dropped Fatboy Slim’s Praise You.

He also dropped a number of hip hop classics such as Ante Up – M.O.P, Full Clip – Gangstarr, Woo Hah – Busta Rhymes and Step Into My World – KRS-One. All the while scratching and mixing with ease. A highlight from JFB’s set was his scratching over Rage Against the Machine’s Killing in the Name of. The dexterous lad giving the vinyl and mixer a real workout.

Another local DJ, Temple, closed out the night and Dank’s first event for twenty sixteen. Dank’s next event is Australian emcee Tornts on Saturday 6th February at Babushka Leederville. Event details here.
