Following the release of his seventh studio album No Compromise, Melbournian rapper Tornts returned to Perth bringing his gritty street style.
A pioneer of Australian hip hop, Tornts has a strong and dedicated following with many lads showing up for Saturday’s show at Babushkas Leederville.
Saturday’s event, hosted by Dank, included an interesting mix of Perth artists with some exciting sets from Macshane with Dazastah and Fdel, Intrusive Thoughts and Kogz with Rob Shaker. Newcomer DJ Uncle Sam held down the decks between sets with classic hip hop bangers and even had the honour of DJing for Tornts’ closing set.
Despite being relatively new to the Perth hip hop scene, Macshane and his name has been popping up everywhere of late and on many local line ups. Known for his quick-witted freestyling abilities, his set with Dazastah on the MPC and Fdel DJing was an engaging start to the night. Spitting on topics ranging from people in the crowd to SpongeBob Squarepants, Macshane did not miss a beat or break. The raps supported by the captivating Dazastah drums and Fdel turntablism.
The energetic group, Intrusive Thoughts, followed Macshane’s low-key prelude. Their set giving the slowly building crowd an opportunity to crowd around the minute stage. Joined by their DJ, Uncle Sam, the rapping trio lifted the atmosphere to party-mode with their lively songs. Although Reams seems to be the group’s unofficial breakout star, Sumoe and Trad are just as skilled rappers, and the trio have a good-humoured dynamic on stage. Their set even including a cheeky Shaggy sample from It Wasn’t Me.

By this point in the night, a substantial crowd had arrived and were keen for the staunch hip hop beats.
Next up was popular up-and-comer Kogz, joined at first by fellow emcees Iveone & Rants and later Sever, with Rob Shaker on the decks. Similar to Macshane, Kogz is fairly new on the Perth scene but has developed a strong following thanks to his raw style. Not having seen Kogz perform before, I was eager to witness what the hype was all about. And Kogz did deliver, a strong performance that engaged with the hectic crowd. Like a pro, he worked the stage to his benefit and, later when joined by Sever, really amped the crowd for the headline set.
Much to the benefit of the crowd, Tornts did not mess around and hopped on stage at 11pm. Here to promote, No Compromise he performed Stand Clear, Ride and All I Know, which the eager crowd lapped up. Paying respect to fallen soldiers, Tornts paid homage to the Apprentice, who passed in 2015, and even shouted out Perth legend Hunter. With many years under his belt, Tornts is an experienced performer and knows how to rouse a crowd. Unfortunately, however, his set was short-lived, with Tornts only being on stage for half an hour. But the punters didn’t mind enjoying every minute of it and hanging with him after the set for a chat or a photo.
Another successful event for Dank and its only February. Keep your eyes locked to the Dank page for future events.
