Music Review: Kaypee Life EP

Kaypee is an Indigenous Hip Hop artist hailing from Albany, WA. Since popping onto the scene in 2012, Kaypee has been doing some amazing things with his career. After supporting Ty Dolla Sign for his Perth show in 2017, Kaypee was more than ready to get his EP Life in the works and get it out there for his fans.
I initially expected the EP to be full of love songs and heartbreak, perhaps due to the simple cover artwork with red roses. To me roses are connected with romance.
Kaypee touched on a lot of different emotions on the 6-track EP from being in a happy place and in love to a dark place in his own head. It made me think “why did he choose roses?”. But it dawned on me that roses represent the concept of life. They are used or presented at any life event. From the happiest times to the saddest, and you feel those emotions whilst listening to these songs.
The first track Life, well the name speaks for itself, it has many relatable issues. Kaypee talks about getting on with his life, trying to make it in the world and the loss of contact with old friends. The beat is calm and not overpowering, so it allows you to focus and listen to his words. Listening to this song a few times allowed the concept of the EP cover art to resonate with me.
I really enjoyed listening to Legacy. Kaypee makes it known that he is a proud man of his Indigenous culture and background. And the beat! The beat, the vocals, the effects on the vocals, there are no words on how well this beat was put together. Legacy is a catchy song and you kind of get stuck in the trance in the chorus.
The next track Low Low moves the EP into a slow jam. Low Low is a love song. A song for the ladies.
Kaypee then goes into a real dark place with his next track Good Enough. It is a different song to hear and is a change up from the previous style in the EP. Not only verbally but visually. When you watch the music video for this song you can see it really captures the insanity and the fight that goes on in Kaypee’s head. Something a lot of people can relate to.

Although a very chilled EP overall, Alone will have your head nodding to the beat. The change in the vocals throughout this song is a nice switch up too.
I really like the beat in Thank You. The sample used sounds like it’s sampled straight off an old record, and is complemented by the trumpets and the piano keys.
The production, mixing and mastering on the Life EP is amazing, the beats are insane. Mostly as the vocals and the effects on the vocals itself, without sounding overly auto tuned can be tricky for some producers. I also really liked how some songs featured trumpets and then other songs were simple piano keys, a snare and a simple bass line. The producers really worked with Kaypee’s voice and flow.
Kaypee has a lot to say and is a good storyteller, he can easily get his message, whatever it may be, out there. But I would have also liked to hear an upbeat song, because I think Kaypee’s voice has a lot of potential to do something even greater.
With the beats on the EP, it was surprising how mellow the tracks were. I noticed a few small outbursts in his flow and the change up in the vocals, which was refreshing to hear, as it wasn’t just one tone throughout. I also sense Kaypee may be a fan of Drake as I can hear a bit of his style come through in some of the songs.
Life EP has a very sit by the fire with your mate’s kind of vibe. It has you nodding to the beat but it’s something you can vibe out to too.
Life EP is out now on all platforms!
