"I just surrendered to my calling, it’s a spiritual thing though, it's bigger than me."

Hyclass is my favourite Perth rapper. The girl's got flow, style and skill. In the past couple years, she been on her grind after deciding to quit her day job and focus on music full-time. Her efforts have been rewarded though, with countless show and even an award.

Rappfox catches up with the Queen on her huge 2018 and what she's got in the works for the new year.

Happy New Year Hyclass! How has the start of 2019 been treating you so far? Any resolutions?

It’s been awesome, I’ve had some time to rest and have a break, which was well needed but now I’m also trying to get back into it, been a bit hard to re-motivate with the time off but I’m easing into it having done a couple shows, preparing for more & working on new music.
As for resolutions, in all seriousness I’m constantly wanting to change & improve on things so why wait for a new year. Just keep trying!

You had a huge 2018, congratulations, which started with you quitting your day job and focusing on music, what inspired that?
Thank you! I guess, in my heart I always knew I wasn’t living out the life I was meant to be living, which was being creative, helping others and being an artist. But for a long time I just wasn’t ready to break away from my security and also had some fears of pursuing my passion because I didn’t want to be half arsed. Hence why I never really went all out with my music, yeah I put out a couple things over the years, done some shows but I never went for it. But I just surrendered to my calling, it’s a spiritual thing though, it's bigger than me.

How did you feel about it all when you first quit the “safety” of a full time job?
Excited, nervous but ready!  I’m also very fortunate to have support from my family too. It helped me a lot to fully commit & grind as hard as I possibly could.

You’ve been getting your gig on and have been a support act for many international artist, what were some highlights for 2018?
Honestly, all the shows I got to be apart of were amazing, from locals to internationals, 2 people in crowds to hundreds, I took something special away from each one. But to perform at Festivals was definitely a highlight, just gaining experience on how the logistics are being an artist on those line ups, and that performing is just one small part of what’s expected. There’s a lot going on, a lot of people moving & working, you have to be switched on at all times. I loved the energy! Also going on a national tour supporting Abbe May taught me a lot about how an artist at that level works, Abbe done everything on the tour, so it was a real eye opener & definitely inspired me to become an all rounder, one day!

You also managed to pick up to the WAM Best Hip-Hop Act, the first female artist in awhile I believe, how did that feel? And what opportunities have you seen arise from that award?
It felt overwhelming & an honour. I wouldn’t of been able to accept that award without the help of my Family & Friends. And it was also extra special being the only female nominated in that category and then to take the win, it was surreal. But in the beginning I hadn’t put much thought toward the WAM Awards because I just had my head down, working & figuring out my next steps. It was my Artist Liaison Ruby May who really took me in that direction, which was a little unknown to me but I was very grateful for it. And by the time the Awards night came I felt I had made a lot of strong connections within our local music scene, so it was awesome to see friends all there just killing it, it was a great feeling to be amongst that. As for opportunities, just getting the exposure to the WA Music Industry and being put on their radar was massive. They have been so supportive and It makes me even more prouder to be an WA Artist.

It’s been a few years since you released your EP I NEED U, which is still a fave WA release for me, please tell there is some new music in the works?!
Thank you! And yes it’s been a while since I NEED U, and yes I’m still performing the hell out of those songs, ha-ha. But I’m very happy to say that I am working toward new music. You shall be hearing it all very soon.

What else is planned for 2019?
I felt as though 2018 was spent laying down my foundations as a fully working Artist, which was always my top goal and I worked really hard to do that. So now this year I just want to work on the music and really showing off the different layers to my artistry and the aesthetic of that  creatively & visually, time to take it up a notch! And obviously still gigging my butt off.

Thank you for your time. You know you were my very first interview on Rappfox and I appreciate your support!
That’s so crazy and also really dope. Thank you for all your support over the years, hopefully I make it to London soon.
All the best, much love always.
