Horrorshow Cherry Blossom Tour Review

Traditionally a hip hop show consists of the rapper/s and a DJ on turntables. If you were lucky there would a singer to perform some hooks, if there were any. Recently there has been a resurrection of the live show with many hip hop artists favouring live bands over the traditional DJ set up. Not ones to reject the roots of hip hop however, the DJ is still incorporated into the overall performance to provide the cuts normally produced in the studio.

Horrorshow is one such act who have recently taken their live shows to another level by creating what they call an acoustic sound. The same songs and raps from Solo but performed by a full band, including their DJ/producer, Adit, on the bass guitar.

Opening for the Perth show of the national Cherry Blossom tour was local singer Morgan Bain. Bain is a multi instrumentalist who sings his own brand of R&B/soul. Performing some new unheard tracks, he had the audience captivated with his powerful ballads. Moving between the keyboard and electric guitar whilst not missing a beat in his singing, Bain executed a memorable set and displayed an amazing talent. A local artist to watch out for.

Inside the Rosemount filled quickly with the impending arrival of Horrorshow and band. One of the uncertainties of moving essentially studio-produced music to a live format is the tracks sounding completely different and missing the mark with the crowd. Fortunately, Horrorshow and the band practiced rigorously prior to the launch to ensure the performance were on point. Solo also has a deep voice that translates almost perfectly tonally live.

Their set was a mixture of old favourites, songs from the recent album and live covers. All of which was lapped up by the mesmerised crowd. Waste Your Time and Walk You Home evoked emotion from the crowd, as they murmured along to the hooks. Solo is a passionate wordsmith who seems to write the most moving love songs. Newer songs, Ashtray and Eat The Cake off Bardo State, which are more spirited and energetic had the packed crowd dancing.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Solo used the live set as an opportunity to flex his newly found singing skills, covering The Whitlams’ No Aphrodisiac and crossing between singing and rapping. The band members were also given the opportunity to display their dexterous talent with solos throughout the night and at the close of the show.

When Horrorshow finished the set, it was obvious that there would be an encore as they hadn’t yet performed Cherry Blossom and it was the Cherry Blossom tour… Much to the female crowd members delight, including myself, the boys came back to close the night with the popular love song. Speaking with Solo before their Friday performance, he said, that despite the album being called Bardo State, they tour was called the Cherry Blossom tour because it was the song that resonated with people the most. Looking out at the crowd whilst we all sang along, I can see why. Drake eat your heart out.
